Samodurov, a 6-foot-11 big man, is described as a versatile big man with the ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor. He isn't a traditional stationary post piece, which is good given how the landscape of college basketball has changed in recent years, as it's vital for big men to stretch the floor and do more than just look for touches near the basket.
This move has been widely expected, especially following a pre-mature announcement that he had already committed to the Tar Heels. When he officially withdrew from the 2026 NBA Draft, all signs pointed to Samodurov heading to Chapel Hill, it just became a matter of when the talented big man would make it official.
Terrence Brown sends a special message to UNC fans they have to deliver on
Now, the bulk of Michael Malone's roster construction for the 2026-2027 season is finalized. Leading up to the NBA Draft withdrawal deadline, the two big questions for North Carolina surrounded Samodurov and Matt Able's decisions, both of which went in the Tar Heels' favor.
The roster has an entirely new look, but this group features a ton of potential. Samodurov will pair with the likes of Jarin Stevenson and Sayon Keita to man the frontcourt, while newcomers such as Able, Neoklis Avdalas and Terrence Brown will look to re-shape the backcourt unit.
There might be one or two depth additions still in the works, but overall, the bulk of the offseason work is now finalized for Malone and his staff, as the rotation pieces all seem to be in place for the start of the 2026-2027 season.
