The UNC Baseball program lives to see another day!
The UNC Baseball program has survived at least one more day, as two big wins on Sunday helped them keep their season alive.
Facing elimination, the UNC baseball program knew that Sunday’s slate of events would not be easy.
Without manager Scott Forbes, the Tar Heels needed to find a way to pick up two victories in order to keep their season alive, and they were able to do just that.
In Game 1, North Carolina received some timely hitting and found themselves up 6-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Of course, it’s important to note that the Tar Heels were the “visiting team,” as they lost the pregame coin toss. Even though the game was held in Chapel Hill at Boshamer Stadium, North Carolina found themselves on the field for the bottom of the ninth inning.
The final three outs were nerve-wracking, to say the least!
Georgia began to rally and cut the Tar Heels’ lead to just one with a three-run home run from Chaney Rogers. The Bulldogs thought they were about to tie the game in the ensuing batter, but Vance Honeycutt had other ideas.
Georgia third baseman Josh McAlister sent a Connor Bovair pitch deep to center field, a drive that looked like it was going to be a game-tying home run. However, Honeycutt made a SportsCenter Top 10 play to rob McAlister of a homer while helping his team maintain their lead.
Honeycutt’s huge catch helped shift the momentum back in North Carolina’s favor, as Caden O’Brien came in to record the final out of the game shortly after the web gem play.
After suffering a loss to VCU on Saturday, the Tar Heels came out looking for some revenge in Sunday’s tilt.
The Rams got an early advantage thanks to a two-run homer in the top of the first inning.
Once the Tar Heels stepped up to the plate in the bottom half, they quickly took over the game.
North Carolina batted around in their first plate appearance of the night (one of two times they batted around in the game) and scored seven runs in the first frame to give themselves a comfortable lead.
The Tar Heels were not done, as they went on to score 19 runs, which ties a program record for most runs scored in a single NCAA Tournament game.
On a night that was highlighted by the offense, Angel Zarate and Mac Horvath both put together four-hit performances hitting out of the top two spots in the batting order. Danny Serretti followed in the No. 3 spot with three hits of his own.
North Carolina hit four homers in the game (Zarate, Honeycutt, Osuna, and Castagnozzi), as Honeycutt and Osuna went on to make some program history with their respective long balls.
With the win, the UNC baseball program forces a winner take all game on Monday night. The winner will move onto the Super Regionals, while the loser will see their season end.
Scott Forbes will return to the dugout after serving his two-game suspension, as his Tar Heels look to keep their season alive. The first pitch for Monday’s game is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
