UNC Baseball: Scott Forbes suspended for two games
It looks as if the UNC baseball program will be without head coach Scott Forbes as they look to avoid elimination in the NCAA Tournament.
During the UNC baseball program’s loss to VCU, head coach Scott Forbes was ejected from the game for arguing a controversial call that took place during the third inning of the contest.
To make matters worse: not only was Forbes ejected, but was suspended for the next two games as well.
Shortly after the conclusion of Saturday night’s game, the NCAA announced that Forbes would be suspended. No official statement was released by the NCAA, as we just know at this point that the Tar Heels will look to keep their season alive without their manager in the dugout.
The two calls that went against the Tar Heels were very questionable, to say the least. Of course, Forbes was already probably irritated by the second inning interference call on Tomas Frick, so his frustration with the umpiring crew was stemming over the first few innings of play.
Was his ejection justifiable? Absolutely. Forbes was defending his team and let his frustrations out. It’s not the first and it’s certainly not the last time a manager will be ejected from a game.
The real question remains: why was Forbes suspended for an additional two games? If you’re going to suspend someone, there has to be justification to it: the NCAA can’t just say “we’re suspending Scott Forbes for two games” and not provide any details as to why.
Especially given the circumstances of the games he’ll be forced to miss, as his team is on the brink of elimination in the biggest tournament that the sport has to offer.
Bubba Cunningham, the Director of Athletics at North Carolina, took to Twitter to voice his opinion on the matter.
The NCAA has done a very poor job with this situation and needs to address it immediately. As questionable as the umpiring crew was in making the correct calls, the NCAA is following it up with even more questionable decision-making as they aren’t given a flat-out reason as to why they decided that Scott Forbes needed to be suspended for his actions.
At this point, the UNC baseball program is braced for the fact that they won’t have their manager for the next two games. But hey, maybe it will be motivation for this group to keep their season alive to get their manager back in the dugout during their NCAA Tournament run.
