Coby White gets well-deserved fifth star in latest Rivals150

The University of North Carolina men’s basketball program has one of the top recruiting classes in the country for 2018. Even after missing out on a pair of five-star recruits in Romeo Langford and Simisola Shittu, the Tar Heels’ incoming freshman class is considered one of college basketball’s best.

And given that the Tar Heels are still in the running for freak athlete and YouTube sensation Zion Williamson, things could get even better in Chapel Hill in the coming days.

Williamson, who is set to announce his college decision on January 20th, has North Carolina on a final list that includes Clemson, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and South Carolina.

As things currently stand, though, two of the Tar Heels’ three commits from the class of 2018 are five-star prospects, according to the latest Rivals150.

Nassir Little, who the Tar Heels got a commitment from amid allegations of scandal and corruption at then-favorites Arizona, Miami and Louisville, is ranked fifth in the updated Rivals150 that was released on Tuesday.

Little is a native of Orlando, Florida, and the Tar Heels’ first top-10 recruit since Justin Jackson in 2014. The 6-foot-7, 205-pound wing averaged 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists per game as a junior, leading Orlando Christian Prep to the Class 3A state title.

Combo guard Coby White has finally earned a five-star ranking according to Rivals, coming in at No. 25 on the latest Rivals150.

White is playing at a high level in his final prep season, following up a tremendous junior campaign at Greenfield in which he averaged 31.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game in leading his team to a 23-11 record and an appearance in the North Carolina Independent Schools’ 1A semifinal.

The 6-foot-4, 170-pound North Carolina native has had an impressive two-year stretch at Greenfield School that was recently highlighted by scoring his 3,000th career point, and breaking former Tar Heel Donald Williams’ 27-year-old scoring record at the John Wall Family Foundation Holiday Invitational.

Rechon Black, a 6-foot-7, 180-pound point guard who committed to North Carolina almost two years ago, is the Tar Heels’ third member of the 2018 recruiting class.

He’s ranked 78th according to the new Rivals150, giving the Tar Heels one four-star and two five-star players in 2018, and a total of three prospects in the top-78.

Black was attending Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida before moving home to Concord, North Carolina to attend Cox Mill High School. In doing so, he could be closer to his family and the community that he grew up in; both of which played a large role in bringing him back home before moving to Chapel Hill next season.
