What's the Hubert Davis buyout? UNC has no reason not to make a change

For the buyout cost, it makes sense to just cut the cord at this stage of the game

After that disgusting meltdown we all witnessed on Thursday night, Tar Heel fans are ready for a head coaching change.

Of course, there are variables that go into it, such as whether or not administration is actually going to do what's best for the program and find the right coach to lead UNC back to national prominence.

One of the factors involves a potential buyout of Davis' contract. Under contract until June 30, 2030, the buyout isn't as bad as you'd think...

Hubert Davis contract details at UNC

  • Length: Six-year deal (through June 30, 2030)
  • Base salary remaining: $5.3 million
  • Supplemental compensation remaining: $11.7 million

Hubert Davis potential buyout figures

Based on the parameters of Davis' contract, he would be owed $5.312 million if he were to be fired on April 1.

Postgame Hubert Davis comments are insulting to everyone who watched UNC's collapse

In total, Davis' 2026 total pay is $3.85 million. His compensation increased by $100,000 in each of the final four years of the deal, and the contract included incentive bonuses.

It could be worse

If North Carolina wants to make a change, the buyout numbers, based on the information gathered, could be a lot worse.

The buyout number shouldn't be a deterrent to making a change. If the university decides that Hubert Davis is not the right guy to lead the program moving forward, they need to pony up the buyout money and make the change now before this situation gets completely out of hand.

It will also tell a lot about how the administration feels about the current state of the UNC basketball program. If they are willing to keep things status quo, it ultimately could come back to haunt them, as the longer this inconsistent state of the program continues, the more difficult it will be to turn the ship back around.
