We've seen enough: it's time for a head coaching change in North Carolina.
The final straw came on Thursday night when the Tar Heels, who were up by 19 points in the second half, choked, allowing VCU to not only force overtime, but the win the game in the extra period.
Say what you want about not having Caleb Wilson available. Wilson's absence should not serve as an excuse to keep Davis at the helm. This program continues to struggle with the same issues, and when the going gets tough, Davis is sure to get outcoached.
Hubert Davis doesn’t deserve a free pass on the NCAA Tournament with Caleb Wilson out
What was he thinking?
UNC was rolling early on, and a part of that was due to them getting contributions from some of their reserves.
Zayden High had four points and four rebounds, all of which came in the first half. His energy and intensity provided a spark, one that Davis felt wasn't needed in the second half.
Jaydon Young also provided steady minutes defensively, but even he couldn't get off the bench in the second half!
If it wasn't for Luka Bogavac, who looked like a chicken without a head, struggling, Davis would've acted like Siena and played his starters the rest of the way.
Well, that was a boneheaded decision!
The starters were GASSED
Seth Trimble, who logged 43 minutes, looked like he had no energy left. Henri Veesaar, who logged 42 minutes, was fatigued to the point where he could've used a breather as well.
Nope, Davis continued to ride them, just like he did with the "Iron Five."
Call a timeout!
Does Hubert Davis have a clause in his contract that gives him additional money for every timeout he doesn't use?
When opponents go on a run, he refuses to take a timeout. In need of inbounding the basketball late in the second half, Davis sat on his final timeout, electing to take a five-second violation instead.
Make it make sense!
It's not a knee-jerk reaction
This has been the feeling for quite some time, and the UNC basketball program's performance on Thursday night, especially in the second half, needs to be the final nail in the coffin for this era of Carolina Basketball.
Davis is not the right guy to lead this program moving forward, as this NCAA Tournament meltdown is yet another example of that. Before it's too late, North Carolina has to find a coach to bring the program back to its Blue Blood status, something that has been lost over the past five seasons.
