The status of star defensive end Melkart Abou Jaoude has been a major headline for the UNC football program leading up to their ACC opener against Clemson on Saturday afternoon.
Abou Jaoude, in his second season with the Tar Heels, burst onto the scene a year ago, leading the ACC with 10.5 sacks. He suffered an injury in the season opener against TCU but was able to return to the game, but sat out last week's victory over ETSU.
Now, it appears that UNC will be without their star defensive player once again.
Melkart Abou Jaoude not expected to play vs. Clemson
Pete Thamel of ESPN reported early on Saturday morning that Abou Jaoude is expected to miss his second consecutive game due to a hand/wrist injury. The Newton, New Jersey native has been listed as questionable on the ACC availability report.

Of course, North Carolina would've loved to have entered this game at full strength, especially on the defensive side of the football. Competing against a true freshman quarterback, Abou Jaoude's presence would've been huge for the Tar Heels, given he would be able to cause havoc in the backfield throughout the game.
However, the Tar Heels have to have that "next man up" mentality, as they have the depth along the defensive line to still get the job done.
North Carolina's defense has been a major story so far this season. After allowing 10 points in the first quarter against TCU in Ireland, the Tar Heels' defensive unit has allowed just three points over the last seven quarters of action, as the hope is that the success can continue as they begin ACC play this afternoon.
Abou Jaoude's situation is an interesting one. Throughout the week, there seemed to be hope that he would be able to suit up and play. However, the injury might just be worse than we all anticipated, one that the Tar Heels aren't willing to risk making worse by putting him on the field when he's not fully ready to go.
Given that it's been reported to be a small broken bone in the hand/wrist area, you have to wonder how severe it actually is, given it's an injury that they could put a club/cast on and allow him to play in.
For now, expect Melkart Abou Jaoude to be sidelined once again for the UNC football program. Over the next few hours, we'll wait and see if that decision changes or if any new developments arise.
