One of the major storylines for the UNC football program leading up to its ACC opener against Clemson is the injury status of star defensive end Melkart Abou Jaoude.
After leading the ACC with 10.5 sacks a season ago, Abou Jaoude suffered a hand/wrist injury in the season opener against TCU in Ireland. While he was able to return to the game, he was sidelined for UNC's home opener last weekend against ETSU, a decision that very well could've been a precautionary one for the Tar Heels.
As Saturday afternoon's kickoff is rapidly approaching, Abou Jaoude's status is still up in the air. The first ACC availability report gave us insight as to where things stand currently, but there is optimism with regard to this situation.

Abou Jaoude was listed as "questionable" on the first availability report, giving him a solid chance to be able to play on Saturday afternoon.

The worse case scenario would've been if he was listed strictly as "out." However, his current status could just be a way to say (in not so many words) that he's on track to play, but that is still up in the air.
Those around UNC believe that Abou Jaoude will return when the Tar Heels take the field this weekend, which would be a massive boost for them as they aim to defeat the Tigers for the first time since 2010. With a win, UNC would secure a victory at Clemson for the first time since 2001, a streak that Tar Heel faithful would love to have snapped this weekend.
Having Abou Jaoude on the field for that game would make a huge difference in that quest to return home to Chapel Hill with a 3-0 record before Notre Dame comes to town.
Of course, this storyline could be one that takes us essentially up to kick-off. North Carolina may play it out as long as they can, ensuring that his return wouldn't be putting him at risk of reaggravating the injury, sidelining him for a much longer period of time.
North Carolina's defense has been outstanding through two games this season, allowing just 13 points over eight quarters of play. Of those allowed points, 10 came in the first quarter of the season opener, as opposing offenses have recorded just three points in the past seven quarters of action.
While the competition isn't the best UNC will face this season, it's still impressive to see what the defensive unit has been able to accomplish thus far.
For now, it's a story to follow, as the hope is that Melkart Abou Jaoude will be chasing around Clemson's quarterback for most of Saturday afternoon.
