For a little while now, countless eyes have been on big man Alexandros Samodurov, as rumors started flying that he had committed to North Carolina and Michael Malone. Talks of the Tar Heels having their season changed were brought up, but again, we all need to hold the phone there.
Former UNC natty winner officially retires ahead of his return to Chapel Hill
That's because once again, nothing has changed there and Samodurov is yet to give the staff the news they're hoping for. In case you missed it, Keeping It Heel's Nick Delahanty reported recently that nothing was official and reports of a commitment were premature. That remains to be the case as of this writing. So, could that change sooner rather than later?
Alexandros Samodurov update: Nothing done with UNC just yet
Other outlets continue to run with this commitment, but again, we've got to preach patience. It's clear that Carolina has been in contact and there's mutual interest, which is promising on its own. Adding a player of Samodurov's caliber would be great for the program, as he's a talented young man.
For now, though, all we can do is wait and see for something a little more official to come into play. There was plenty of buzz when Samodurov liked a social media post saying that he was Chapel Hill-bound, but yet again, nothing is locked in.
He could provide a missing piece for the Tar Heels, as depth/talent is needed at center with Henri Veesaar off to the NBA. Veesaar was a total force for Carolina this past season, leading to all-ACC honors. Losing him is a big blow, but bringing in 5-star center Sayon Keita has helped soften the blow.
On top of that, Malone has been on his grind in looking for more help overseas. Momo Faye was once heavily linked to the team, but due to how much NIL money he's looking for, it looks like Texas Tech could be where he ends up playing his college ball, though nothing is done there either.
With Faye and others not expected to play for UNC, a lot of the focus of late has shifted to Samodurov, who is a towering presence at 6-11. If things do get over the line, he'd be an incredible get for Malone at this stage of the offseason and potentially help this program make a ton of noise next season. Things are still unclear here, however, but the hope is a more concrete update will come in within the next few days.
