The news of Deon Thompson returning to Chapel Hill insinuated that the former national champion's playing days are behind him, but he has now made it official.

Deon Thompson retires from professional basketball

Thompson shared a heartfelt social media post indicating that he is officially retiring from the sport of basketball. This comes after he played 16 seasons across 14 countries throughout his professional career.

After 16 years, 22 teams, and 14 countries, it’s time for me to say goodbye to playing the game that I love and that has given me so much. The game has given me so many unforgettable moments and memories, along with incredible people.

Before he took his talents to the professional level, Thompson was a key contributor for Roy Williams and the Tar Heels for four seasons. He was a full-time starter for his final three seasons on campus, serving as a key component on the 2009 national championship squad. Thompson's best overall season came during his senior year (2010), one in which he averaged 13.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per-game.

Now, Thompson is ready to take on the next venture in his life, one that still very much includes the sport of basketball. As previously reported, Thompson is expected to join Michael Malone's coaching staff as a graduate assistant while working toward earning his master's degree at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School.

Thompson put together quite the resume throughout his playing days, as it's not an accident that his career in the pros spanned for over 15 seasons. While he did a ton of moving around, Thompson did all the right things to ensure that teams wanted him on their roster, as his hard work and dedication paid off tremendously for him.

Now, Thompson looks to use his knowledge and expertise to help the future wave of Tar Heels to have the privilege to call Chapel Hill home. As one storied chapter comes to a close, another one with exciting possibilities is set to open up for Deon Thompson.
