The expectations for newest UNC commit, Sayon Keita, were already high, and now they will be elevated to the next level after 247Sports named him a five-star recruit in their updated rankings.

Kelta, an 18-year-old from Mali in West Africa, will come to Chapel Hill after a couple of seasons with FC Barcelona in Spain. The 6-foot-11 (and still growing) big man has played sparingly (under 10 minutes per game) with his club in Spanish Liga ACB and will get a much better chance of development and playing time with the Tar Heels.

Kelta was originally a 2027 recruit, but was able to reclassify to the 2026 class and will be able to join North Carolina over the summer. He is already being pegged in as the Tar Heels' starting center.

With Henri Veesaar off to the NBA Draft, Michael Malone needed a big body in the middle and Kelta will have to be thrown in the fire immediately and develop on the fly in the upcoming season. The good news is the tools are undeniable. Kelta shows great energy up and down the floor. He has shown plenty of promise in his offensive game and as a finisher at the rim. As Kelta continues to round out his offense, he should be able to provide immediate help as a defender and rim protector.

UNC commit Sayon Kelta has been upgraded to a five-star recruit in the 2026 class

Talent isn't an issue for Kelta. He has that in abundance, and it should shine through with him getting real minutes on the floor. There is a lot of development to be done, especially in the weight room. Kelta has to get a lot stronger and things might be a little tough early when he's going against big men that are a little older and have spent more time in a strength program.

Kelta's five-star ranking is the final cherry on what's been an eventful and hectic first month for Malone. He has had to reconstruct the roster through the transfer portal to compete immediately while also bringing in a recruiting class that can provide a young foundation of talent. Now he'll have the next several months to make it all come together.
