South Carolina has found its next head coach, and fortunately for UNC baseball fans, it's not Scott Forbes.
The Gamecocks will be naming Coastal Carolina's Kevin Schnall as its next head coach. Schnall was heavily considered the favorite for the job if South Carolina couldn't lure Forbes out of Chapel Hill.
We can finally put the Scott Forbes to South Carolina rumors to rest
South Carolina tried to get Forbes to become their next head coach. Let's not downplay it one bit. If Forbes had any type of interest, this could've gotten deeper than it already was, but fortunately, Forbes is a Tar Heed born and bred.
COACHING NEWS: @GamecockBSB, as expected since day one, will name Coastal Carolina's Kevin Schnall as its head coach. Schnall, despite flirtations with Scott Forbes (that wasn't happening), has been the frontrunner for the #Gamecocks job all along. Good job by SC not to overthink… pic.twitter.com/3BVzyDL8zA

It goes to show how respected Forbes is for the job he's done at the University of North Carolina. When you're elite at your job, other top-tier caliber programs take notice, especially when head coaching jobs become available.
While South Carolina's opening was probably intriguing for Forbes to at least listen to, it wasn't nearly enough to rip him out of his Carolina blue uniform.
Now, the sole focus can return to the diamond, where the Tar Heels still have business to take care of. This weekend, the Diamond Heels captured their second trip to Omaha in the past three seasons and are set to open up College World Series action on Friday night.
UNC baseball earns the national spotlight for its 2026 College World Series debut
While the rumors about Forbes future were circulating, of course it serves as a bit of a distraction. However, the Tar Heels cancelled out the noise, putting their sole focus on baseball, finding a way to come back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat USC in the Chapel Hill Super Regionals.
The good news is, those rumors can now be put to bed ahead of North Carolina's trip to Omaha this week. While the interest from South Carolina (and their heavy pursuit of Forbes) shouldn't surprise anyone, as the UNC baseball program has one of the best coaches in the business guiding the ship in Chapel Hill.
It's situations like these that remind us just how good we've got it, especially considering that our head coach has no intentions of coaching anywhere but where he is right now.
