The investigation surrounding the UNC football program has finally come to a close.
While Michael Lombardi resigned from his position as the program's general manager two weeks ago, it was revealed on Thursday that Steve Belichick resigned as the defensive coordinator of the UNC football program. Belichick's medical leave will take him through October 26, with his official resignation date being set for October 27.
Following the conclusion of the investigation, the University of North Carolina released a statement on the matter. See what the university had to say below:

The University has concluded a thorough and independent investigation into allegations related to culture and climate within the Carolina football program.
The investigation determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct. The investigation also found that these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure.
As the University previously announced, General Manager Michael Lombardi resigned from the program effective September 3. Steve Belichick has resigned from his position of defensive coordinator, effective October 27, 2026, following the conclusion of his current medical leave.
Throughout the investigation, the University has been guided by the legal advice of outside counsel. All necessary corrective actions are now underway and will be overseen by Carolina Athletics and the Office of University Counsel. With these actions, the University considers the investigation to be resolved.
Consistent with University policy regarding personnel matters, there will be no further comment on individuals. As always, should credible new information arise, the University will evaluate it and take appropriate action consistent with its policies and responsibilities.
Separately, Carolina Football has suspended Keeyun Chapman from the team indefinitely in connection with an incident Tuesday night.
Chapman’s suspension, like the actions resulting from the investigation, reflect the University’s commitment to accountability and the well-being of its student athletes. We believe the steps announced today will help make Carolina Football a stronger program and one that continues to earn the pride of the entire Carolina community.
What's important here
Obviously, the pair of resignations (one we knew about and the one that just came to light on Thursday) are the focal points. The longer it went on, the more it seemed likely that Belichick would eventually resign, but the way the statement is written leaves room for interpretation as to whether there is more to this story (as suggested by news reports over the last few weeks).
Hearing that the actions were isolated and not a systemic failure is a positive sign. If the university deemed it to be a system issue, we'd have a much bigger problem on our hands.
Chapman's suspension shouldn't come as a surprise following the news of his recent arrest. He, along with fellow freshman wide receiver C.J. Sadler, had already been ruled out for Saturday afternoon's game against Clemson.
Now that the investigation is over, the hope is that the attention can return back to the football field. The Tar Heels have been working hard and started the 2026 season off strong, as conference play needs to be the main focus for Bill Belichick and his team as the regular season continues to roll on.
