After over a month-long wait, we finally have some news regarding the Michael Lombardi situation in Chapel Hill.
Lombardi, who was placed on administrative paid leave due to an internal investigation, has officially resigned from his position as the general manager of the UNC football program. Pete Thamel of ESPN was the first to report the news on Thursday afternoon.

Michael Lombardi resigns as the GM of the UNC football program
Lombardi was hired as the UNC football program's general manager in December of 2024, joining forces with Bill Belichick as part of the new regime in Chapel Hill. He was in the second year of a three-year guaranteed contract, one that was paying him $1.5 million annually and made him the highest-paid general manager in the sport.
The university placed Lombardi on paid administrative leave on July 27, stemming from a human resources complaint. Since then, it has been rather quiet, as the university really hasn't provided much information regarding the investigation.
Now, UNC is without a general manager, but it remains to be seen if Lombardi resigned due to how long the investigation was taking or was he asked to resign by the university itself.
These are still the details we need answers to.
The University of North Carolina released a statement on the matter:
"Effective September 3, 2026, Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position as General Manager of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s football program. The University will continue its ongoing investigation and will consider all appropriate corrective actions responsive to the information it learns."
Let's face it: when this investigation first reached the surface, it almost felt certain that Lombardi's time in Chapel Hill was likely over. While it was believed that we would have some type of resolution within 30 days, it had dragged out further, pointing even more so to Lombardi's eventual exit.
Of course, it's possible that Lombardi was asked (or given the choice to) resign from his position. Given this news, we should expect that some type of information from the university should follow, especially as they wrap up this situation.
The good news is that this distraction can now be fully put behind us. Following UNC's season-opening victory over TCU, the full attention could return to what matters most: the product on the actual football field.
With Lombardi out of the picture, expect UNC to take an all-hands-on-deck approach to fill the void for the time being. Talks of bringing in another general manager will likely occur behind the scenes, but it could be something that won't be addressed until the offseason, given the timetable of where we are at the start of the college football season.
