When you're able to stack victories in regional play, good things tend to happen.
For Scott Forbes and the UNC baseball program, they did just that, defeating VCU in the Chapel Hill Regional opener on Friday while following it with a hard-fought victory over ECU in the winner's bracket game.
Colin Hynek delivered the swing that UNC desperately needed against ECU
Now, the Diamond Heels await their opponent for the Chapel Hill Regional finals, one that they hope they can wrap up on Sunday night.
If history continues to repeat itself, the Tar Heels have put themselves into a great position to advance to the Super Regionals once again.
History is trending heavily in favor of the Diamond Heels
Since this NCAA Tournament format was put into place in 1999, the UNC baseball program has started 2-0 in regional play on 13 separate occasions. Of the previous 12 occurances, the Diamond Heels have advanced to the Super Regionals 11 of those instances, all of which have come consecutively.
The lone time that it didn't pan out for the Tar Heels was back in 2000 during the Montclair Regional, one in which they got swept by Penn State in the regional finals.
The hope is that this trend of advancing to the Super Regionals after starting the tournament 2-0 continues to bode well for the boys in Carolina Blue.
Caden Glauber continues to prove that he's no ordinary freshman
Being able to win the first two games is a huge boost, especially when you're hosting the event. The Tar Heels can sit patiently awaiting the winner of ECU and VCU on Sunday afternoon, a game that UNC fans hope goes into extra innings and burns a ton of pitching on both sides.
Of course, history is what history is. It's a tale of how the program has performed in certain situations in the past. However, that history means nothing when the Diamond Heels take the field on Sunday night, as they aren't necessarily worried about the streak, but are definitely focused on clinching a spot in the Super Regionals.
They'll leave the facts to people like us who care about these types of things. All they are worried about is continuning to win baseball games.
