It took some time for the UNC baseball program to build some momentum on Saturday night at Boshamer Stadium.
Jason DeCaro didn't have his best stuff on the mound, allowing three early ECU runs to score. North Carolina, serving as the away team due to one of college baseball's dumbest rules, went into the top half of the fourth inning looking for an offensive spark.
Colin Hynek was the one who provided that, and the story of how it went down is simply incredible.
Colin Hynek provides the spark that UNC desperately needed
With two runners on and one out, Hynek stepped up to the plate as the tying run. After whiffing on a first pitch changeup, head coach Scott Forbes called a timeout to speak to his senior catcher.
On the very next pitch, this is what happened.

Hynek crushed a fastball over the centerfield fence, tying the game and completely shifting the momentum in the Tar Heels favor. His clutch home run felt like a huge weight off the Diamond Heels' shoulders, finally breaking through against an ECU pitching staff that was taxed after a 14-inning victory over Tennessee on Friday afternoon.
Well, the big question is, what did Scott Forbes say to Hynek during that timeout?
Forbes, who joined the ACC Network broadcast a few innings later, simply told the crew calling the game that he told Hynek to not let the offspeed pitch slow down his bat speed, also adding some words of encouragement as well.
Ryan Lynch delivers exactly what UNC needed in the Chapel Hill Regional opener
While he's an excellent baseball coach, maybe Forbes should be some type of motivational speaker as a side hustle! Let's face it: he has a knack for getting the best out of his teams, a skill that could be useful in a motivational speaking role as well!
Hitting in a lineup that features some of the sport's biggest stars, Hynek isn't typically the guy who draws the most attention. However, his presence with the bat was felt with that one crucial swing of the bat, one that played a major role in helping the Diamond Heels secure a spot in the Chapel Hill Regional finals on Sunday night.
