Michael Malone and UNC will get their chance to impress a towering 2028 recruit

Andy Betts, a 7-foot-1 former basketball player, starred at Long Beach State before enjoying a 14-year career in Europe. Michelle Betts, who married Andy, was a volleyball standout at Long Beach State and a member of the 1993 national championship squad.

Their children have continued on their legacy of athleticism. Most sports fans have heard the name Lauren Betts, especially after she just led UCLA to the 2026 national title and earned the Most Outstanding Player award for the NCAA Tournament. Her sister, Sienna, a former McDonald's All-American Game MVP, is still at UCLA and looks to carry on the success the Bruins have put together.

That leads us to their younger brother, Dylan, a 7-foot-4 big man who is just about to enter his junior year of high school!

Set to take his talents to IMG Academy this fall, Betts earned an offer from the Tar Heels back on July 1. The offer piqued his interest, and just a few weeks later, an interesting development in his recruitment was revealed.

UNC among the slate of unofficial visits for four-star big man Dylan Betts

Multiple media outlets, including 247Sports and Rivals, have confirmed that Betts has scheduled unofficial visits between September 11 and October 12.

After the rising junior makes stops at Michigan and Illinois, he will visit Chapel Hill to see what the Tar Heels have to offer. He is currently projected to visit North Carolina for the weekend of September 25 to 27 and will wrap up his unofficial visits tour with a stop at Alabama.

Currently ranked as the No. 13 overall prospect in the 2028 class according to Rivals Industry Composite, Betts already has a slew of offers to sort through. Along with interest from the aforementioned teams, Betts has also secured offers from Florida State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Purdue, UCLA, and USC.

The Tar Heels will likely have to compete against other programs that will throw their hat in the ring at some point during his recruitment, along with those already heavily invested. It's a good sign that Michael Malone and his staff have secured an unofficial visit from Betts, indicating that the interest at this point seems to be very mutual.

In just a few short months, Michael Malone and his staff have shown that the Tar Heels will be heavily pursuing the elite high school talent that's available. They are going big-game hunting, and aren't going to be one of those programs who doesn't pull out every stop to get the best players to come to Chapel Hill.

Dylan Betts is one of those examples, as the Tar Heels are already putting a heavy emphasis on convincing him to call Chapel Hill his future home. You have to give this staff credit, as they are recruiting the way that the University of North Carolina always should.
