Danny Green announces his retirement from the sport of basketball
Danny Green has officially announced his retirement from the sport of basketball.
The former UNC basketball standout made it official on Thursday afternoon with the social media post (and video) that can be seen below.
After being selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft, Green proved he belonged in the league. While most UNC basketball fans will remember his highlight reel dunks (especially the one over Duke guard Greg Paulus) and his dancing skills before tip-off (along with his impact on a UNC basketball national championship squad), Green earned the reputation as an elite shooter and defensive wizard.
Those skills helped him stay in the NBA for 15 seasons, as the former Tar Heel played for six different NBA franchises over his career. He was part of many successful teams, having won three NBA championships with three different franchises.
In 832 games, Green averaged 8.7 points while shooting 42.1% from the floor (including 40% from three-point range). For his efforts on the defensive end of the floor, Green was named to the All-Defensive Team for the 2016-2017 season.
Injuries have derailed the final seasons of his career, limiting him to just 13 games over his last two seasons. He has since taken on roles in broadcasting and podcasting, two areas that we should expect to see a lot out of him as he embarks on his retired life!
One thing is for sure: Danny Green succeeded at every level of the sport of basketball and now has a outstanding career to look back on. Now, we'll all wait and see what his future plans on as he officially steps away from the sport of basketball.
