Training camp proves to be a big opportunity for guys fighting to earn a roster spot. Unfortunately, injuries derail some players’ hopes, but these occurrences do open up roster spots for others to claim.

Former UNC football standout Nate McCollum is a recent example of that, signing a contract with the Arizona Cardinals organization.

Following placing Quez Watkins on Injured Reserve, the Cardinals were looking for additional depth at the wide receiver position. Insert McCollum, an undrafted free agent who spent some time with the New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks this offseason.

After three seasons at Georgia Tech, McCollum transferred to North Carolina to finish up his collegiate career. Over two seasons with the program, the 5-foot-9, 185-pound wide receiver recorded 68 catches for 743 yards and a touchdown. If it weren’t for injuries and some issues with drops, McCollum’s numbers could’ve been much higher.

Of course, situations like these are considered “long shots” for players to make rosters. However, it’s not impossible by any means.

McCollum will now head to Arizona in an effort to make the most of this newfound opportunity. While the goal is to earn a spot with the Cardinals, the preseason serves as an audition for teams across the league, giving guys like McCollum the chance to show what he can do on the field.

With the addition of McCollum, the Cardinals got themselves a wide receiver who can be an impact both on the outside or in the slot. The latter is the best spot to utilize him, given his speed and playmaking ability.

Along with what he does as a pass catcher, McCollum has experience on special teams returning punts. In a sport where finding your niche is crucial, maybe special teams can be the way that McCollum works his way onto the roster, allowing him more time to work his way up the depth chart at his true position.

All it takes is one team to take a chance on you, and that’s what McCollum is working toward finding.
