The start to the 2026 season hasn't gone as planned for Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers.
After taking a brutal beatdown from LSU in their season opener, the Tigers didn't look anything close to the type of team that we've grown so accustomed to seeing during Swinney's tenure. While they did defeat Georgia Southern for their first victory of the 2026 season, it wasn't pretty, as they didn't cover the spread in a 22-7 win, a game we all expected to be more of a blowout.
To add to that, their starting quarterback suffered an injury that already has him ruled out for Clemson's upcoming meeting with Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels.
Clemson QB Christopher Vizzina expected to be sidelined due to injury
Vizzina, a senior from Birmingham, Alabama, left Saturday's game early due to an elbow injury. He completed four of seven passes for just 19 yards in his limited action against Georgia Southern, throwing both a touchdown pass and an interception before leaving the game.
Freshman Tait Reynolds came in the game and led Clemson on five scoring drives, as now he's expected to be under center when the Tigers host the Tar Heels on Saturday.

Regardless of who takes the snaps for Clemson, the quarterback position remains a major question mark for Swinney and the Tigers. Vizzina won the job out of training camp, which was the expected outcome given he possessed more experience than his competition, but his play in the season opener already has fans clamoring for a potential change.
In essentially five quarters of play this season, Vizzina completed 14 of 23 passes for 102 yards. Reynolds came in on Saturday and threw for 178 yards, but did take five sacks in his second collegiate appearance.
For North Carolina, you have to think this is a very winnable game. Given how well the Tar Heels defense has performed, it wouldn't be a stretch to think that they can continue that success against the Tigers.
Let's face it: this isn't one of the star-studded Clemson offenses we've seen in the past.
North Carolina might be getting Clemson at the absolute right time. Knowing Swinney and how he operates, you would expect that his team will get on track sooner rather than later, but the first two weeks of the season have proved that there's still plenty of work to be done.
In the meantime, UNC needs to take advantage.
This game has the makings of being a low-scoring affair. If North Carolina can put together some early scoring drives, it will put pressure on Clemson. Riding with a young, inexperienced quarterback, this could be a challenge, especially having to navigate the different looks that Bill Belichick and the defensive unit will throw his way.
Reynolds is a raw talent, but the talent is certainly there. While you can't take Clemson lightly by any means, the early signs that the Tigers have shown have to have the Tar Heels feeling pretty confident leading up to their first conference game of the 2026 season.
