The UNC Basketball program currently has two commitments for the 2022 recruiting class, landing four-star Seth Trimble and three-star Will Shaver in the month of June.

Hubert Davis’ recruiting board for the class is starting to take shape as he’s identified his top targets and is in full pursuit. But while the Tar Heels are after a number of recruits still, they have appeared to fall behind in the race for a five-star post player.

Five-star small forward Mark Mitchell went on a few different visits in the month of June, taking trips to Duke, Kansas, UCLA and Missouri during the month. He didn’t take a trip to North Carolina which seemingly took the Tar Heels out of the race or at the very best, put them behind those schools.

But not so fast.

When recapping his visits with 247Sports lead recruiting analyst Eric Bossi, Mitchell hinted that he could indeed take more visits and that North Carolina is a program that is in the mix to get a visit:

"There has been some speculation that because Mitchell has taken visits and isn’t playing this summer that a decision could be coming soon. Not so fast. Mitchell said that North Carolina is very much a possibility to set up a visit with and that he’s not in a hurry to decide. Look for him to take second visits to the school involved and wait until after the start of the 2021-22 season to make his decision.“I’m probably trying to make a decision later in the year,” said Mitchell. “Maybe in December or January just to be able to get a feel for everything. I want to see them play. I’m probably going to go visit again in the fall."

That’s good news for UNC fans that he’s waiting to make his decision and UNC is on the radar for a visit in the future. Both of those work in UNC’s favor. However, are the Tar Heels still behind in this race? It appears so.

With some ground to make up, the first thing needed is to get him on campus and make an impact in his recruitment. Davis and his staff need to impress Mitchell if they want to come back and land this talented five-star recruit for their 2022 class.

Next. UNC is in consistent contact with this recruit. dark
