Should we rule out the North Carolina Tar Heels for this top recruit in the 2021 recruiting class? Well, their odds aren’t great at the moment

As Roy Williams and the UNC Basketball program continue to push to add to their 2021 recruiting class, their options are starting to dwindle down a bit. Over the past month or so, UNC has lost out on some recruits in the 2021 class and are now down to just three active offers.

Among those active offers, UNC’s best chance appears to be with five-star combo guard Hunter Sallis who is also on Kentucky’s radar. While Kentucky appears to be the team to beat in this recruitment, the Tar Heels are by no means out of the race just yet.

However, that possibly might not be able to be said about another target.

Five-star recruit Chet Holmgren is one of the top players in this class and holds an offer from UNC currently. While Holmgren’s recruitment has been silent of late, one recruiting analyst took his shot at predicting where he will land.

Rob Cassidy of Rivals broke down the top contenders for Holmgren on his list of seven schools that are still in it. But as you scrolled down past teams, you won’t see the Tar Heels name on the list.

Cassidy believes that Gonzaga is the team to beat followed by Ohio State, Minnesota and Michigan as he left UNC off the top four teams. Here is what Cassidy wrote on Gonzaga and Holmgren’s chances:

"Gonzaga has a ton working in its favor, so I feel somewhat comfortable having them in the top spot despite not feeling confident enough to enter an official prediction. Holmgren took an official visit to Spokane back in October of last year, which has certainly worked in the Zags’ favor. The fact that Holmgren’s close friend and former teammate,  Jalen Suggs, signed with Gonzaga in last year’s class is also a factor. Holmgren likes the way Mark Few’s system can adapt to his versatility, which seems to mean a lot to the 7-footer."

That’s not good news for the Tar Heels and while it’s just one analysts opinion, recent signs show that the Tar Heels have a lot of ground to make up in the Holmgren recruitment. They haven’t been officially eliminated just yet but it’s going to be a long road to landing him.
