Hubert Davis has landed his first commitment as head coach of the UNC Basketball program and it comes in the 2022 recruiting class.

Three-star center Will Shaver pledged his verbal commitment to the program just hours after his official visit to Chapel Hill wrapped up on Wednesday. The Alabama native was the first player to visit UNC during the open visit period after the NCAA lifted restrictions to start June and it didn’t take long for him to commit.

Shaver committed to the Tar Heels per multiple sources including Tar Heel Illustrated:

The 6-foot-9, 245-pound Shaver had a total of 12 offers from programs including one in Mid-May from the Tar Heels. After UNC offered, Shaver scheduled his official visit right away not wasting anytime. And now he didn’t waste time to commit, either.

Shaver is ranked No. 146 overall, No. 16 center and the No. 2 player in the state of Alabama per the 247Sports composite rankings.

The recruit was scheduled to also visit Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Kansas, Purdue, and Iowa in the month of June.

Despite being only a three-star recruit, the commitment of Shaver is a big one for various reasons for the Tar Heels. It’s not only Davis’ first commitment overall with the Tar Heels but he’s now on the board in terms of the 2022 recruiting class as the Tar Heels were shutout going into the Summer.

The other thing to note is that Shaver fits the mold for a UNC center. He’s a good shooter for his size and can stretch the floor in the style of UNC’s offense with how they like to run their bigs down the floor. Shaver also told 247Sports that UNC was pitching him to come in and start right away as a freshman. And it appeared as if that pitch worked.
