The UNC basketball program will now host Northeastern this week in Chapel Hill after their game against the Virginia Tech Hokies was postponed.

The Tar Heels were supposed to play a home game against the Miami Hurricanes on February 8th, but it was postponed after a video of Armando Bacot and Day’ron Sharpe surfaced that showed the two players gathering with others in a dorm room not wearing masks. This week, the Tar Heels’ game against Virginia Tech set for February 16 was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns within the Hokies’ program.

The Tar Heels, having only played six conference home games and not wanting to go another week between games, began searching for an opponent willing to travel to Chapel Hill for a mid-week matchup. North Carolina extended an open invitation on social media platforms for any team, regardless of conference affiliation, to face off with the Tar Heels at the Dean Smith Center.

The Northeastern Huskies answered the call on Monday. The Huskies are 9-7 and currently in 2nd place in the Colonial Athletic Association. Like most teams this season, they, too, have dealt with postponements — five games to be exact. And similar to the Tar Heels, the Huskies have NCAA Tournament hopes. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has them as a 15-seed in his latest iteration of Bracketology.

North Carolina will look to rebound against Northeastern after a flat showing against Virginia on Saturday that saw the Tar Heels score under 50 points for the fourth consecutive time in the series. It also marked the Tar Heels’ seventh consecutive loss to the Cavaliers, and seventh in a row in Charlottesville.
