Former Tar Heel George Lynch has been out of basketball for a few years, but now he’s starting his coaching career at Clark Atlanta.

It was 25 years ago this year that George Lynch was the East Regional’s most outstanding player on the North Carolina Tar Heels’ national title team.

Lynch was a four-year player at North Carolina, averaging double-digits in each of his last three years. He shot 52 percent from the field for his career, too.

Fast forward to 2018 and Lynch is beginning his head coaching career. The former Tar Heel has been a graduate assistant and a strength coach, but this will be his first head coaching job.

Lynch will take over a Clark Atlanta program that currently plays on the Division II level. Clark is fresh off of a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018, which propelled its coach to leave for another job.

The former coach at Clark, Darrell Walker, was a coach for George Lynch during his NBA days. When Walker left Clark, Lynch was one of the names he suggested to take over for him.

Lynch’s hiring just adds to the notorious coaching tree of the late Dean Smith. Coach Smith was more than just a good coach, he was a great leader and teacher. He believed that developing strong men was more important than developing strong players. And despite his passing, we are still reaping what he sowed as a society.

Lynch will bring to Clark everything that he learned under Coach Smith. He will turn that program into not just one of the better Division II programs, but also train guys to have high character.

Lynch will most definitely have chances to get better jobs if he succeeds at Clark Atlanta. He is still fairly young at only 47 years of age.
