Xavier Lewis put the country on notice with his dominant season opening performance

There's no doubt that Xavier Lewis was ready for his first career start at the college level.

If you watched the UNC football program's season opening victory over TCU, there's no doubt that you heard Lewis' name on multiple occasions. That's not because the broadcast team enjoyed saying his name: it's a testament to just how dominant he was in what could be his breakout performance.

The Tar Heels defense overall was outstanding, holding TCU's offense to 10 points (all of which came in the first quarter). It was the defensive line that spearheaded this effort, led by Lewis' insane performance.

Overall, Lewis recorded seven tackles (4.5 for loss) to go along with two sacks. He made two major plays in this game, one that forced an intentional grounding call in the third quarter and was in on the action when UNC made a stop on fourth down and one from the five yard line.

When you put together a performance like that, it's safe to say that you earned player of the game accolades!

Let's take a second to remember the journey that Lewis has taken to get to this point. This dude was a zero, yes, zero, star prospect out of high school and showed flashes of just how good he could be during his true freshman season a year ago.

Now, Lewis is not only a starter for North Carolina, but is on the verge of being a breakout star for them.

Last season, we saw Melkart Abou Jaoude serve as the breakout star for the Tar Heels defense. While he is back in the fold for another season, he's not sneaking up on anyone this season, as defenses will be paying him close attention any time he's on the field. If Lewis is able to continue being a force to be reckowned with, the Tar Heels have the potential of having one of the best defensive line units in the ACC, a unit that showed just how good they could be in the season opener.

Playing for one of the greatest defensive minds that the sport of football has ever seen in Bill Belichick, Lewis has taken tremendous strides to get to this point. He's playing the game with a chip on his shoulder, laying it all out on every single play, and you can just see from watching the game that TCU had no answers to slow him down.

What makes his growth as a player even more impressive is how he went from a situational player a season ago to being a guy who could essentially be an everydown guy for the Tar Heels defense this season.

It just goes to show the hard work and dedication this young man has put in.

Now, Lewis aims to build off his incredible performance in Ireland, hoping to string together more games like the one he did against TCU. His efforts show that the Tar Heels might just have already identified their next star along the defensive line, a group that fans will certainly be excited to see more of as the 2026 season rolls along.
