With how competitive he is, you already know former UNC star Caleb Wilson has absolutely hated being off the hardwood this long. Before being taken with the No. 4 overall pick by the Chicago Bulls, Wilson saw his dream freshman season with UNC end due to a wrist injury, followed by a broken thumb which required surgery.
Come July 10, though, the rookie phenom is set to make his NBA Summer League debut with the Bulls, and it's a moment he's been waiting on for months. It's one thing to make your pro debut, but for Wilson things are made even more special due to the adversity he's had to overcome this year. This gives Carolina fans yet another reason to watch him put on a show for Chicago.
“I remember getting injured, and all I was ever thinking about was I’ll be playing on July 10th. And that was like 3, 4, or 5 months ago," Wilson told the media. "So I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. It’s kind of surreal to see how fast it all went by. But I’m definitely excited to play. I feel like when I do play out there, it will be kind of like today, a little jitters because you haven’t played in so long. But I’ll be good.”
Caleb Wilson has extra motivation to outshine Cam Boozer during his NBA debut
Things are only made even more intriguing here for NBA fans, as Wilson and the Bulls are set to take on Cam Boozer and the Memphis Grizzlies in this Summer League opener. Earlier this offseason, Wilson did not hold back in saying he's going to be motivated to make people realize him going No. 4 was a big mistake.
He respectfully reminded everyone that when he faced AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Boozer this season, UNC was able to come out on top with a win, with Wilson looking stellar in each victory. The W over the Blue Devils was unforgettable, as people in town are probably still celebrating Seth Trimble's 3-pointer right before the buzzer.
While those victories in 2025-26 were a ton of fun, Wilson is now focused on making sure his first season with the Bulls is a memorable one, and things could get started with a bang vs. the Grizzlies in this summer showdown. Obviously, there are going to be plenty of eyes on both Wilson and Boozer, as they're both considered the 'saviors' for their respective franchises.
Last campaign was nothing short of a disaster for Chicago, as the team finished 20 games under .500, coming nowhere close to even sniffing postseason play. That's never going to be good enough, but adding Wilson alone has helped people in The Windy City forget about what this team just went through.
The talented forward can only make things better for everyone by living up to the hype, with his first test right around the corner. Everyone can't wait to see Wilson play at a high level, with the Carolina faithful knowing exactly what this player is made of.
