Well, it's safe to say that this is a welcome curveball that plenty of UNC fans did not see coming. For the 2026 class, one of the top uncommitted prospects is Serbian big man Miikka Muurinen, who has professional experience with Partizan Belgrade in his home country.

UNC not giving up hope on dream transfer target Juke Harris

Muurinen is now eyeing the college game and while North Carolina previously seemed to be out of the race here, it now looks like Michael Malone is making him a trip priority and the 6-10, 185-pounder is feeling the love from the Tar Heels staff.

That's because according to Arkansas reporter Kevin McPherson of hogville.net, his sources are telling him that UNC is among the teams standing out a bit, with LSU and Arkansas also fully in the mix. Could this end up being a three-team battle for the youngster?

UNC and Michael Malone are back in the hunt for 5-star PF Miikka Muurinen

"We gave you the intel that came from one of my international sources talking with his agency/representation, effectively his agent, telling me that his impression was after running through the teams that have been on Muurinen and maintained recruitment of him, that his impression was based on that conversation without the agent exactly ranking them, that he felt like it was Arkansas, North Carolina and LSU."

So, you're saying there's a chance? Arkansas has been in this battle for the long haul, but Malone and Co. indeed are ready to do what's needed late to give Muurinen something serious to think about. Could that Heels have a bit of an advantage over the others?

It's easy to forget that the playmaker's mom Jenni suited up in Chapel Hill for two seasons in the early 2000s. Is that going to make a big difference in his recruitment? It's hard to say, but it's certainly not going to hurt Malone's chances of pulling off a stunner.

Muurinen is one of the top players in the country for the 2026 class, ranked five stars by 247Sports. Per the 247Sports Composite, he's the No. 8 PF in the nation and No. 32 prospect nationally. Throughout his recruitment, he has picked up offers from Michigan, Arkansas, UNC, LSU, Indiana, Kentucky and many others.

Malone has been working overtime out on the recruiting trail, which has included keeping 5-star stud Maximo Adams on board, while he's also working to get the same done with Dylan Mingo. Can you imagine if he also gets Muurinen to sign too? The UNC faithful would go wild if that happens, but it's suddenly back on the table for Carolina.
