Just when we all thought Caleb Wilson was set to return to action...

Caleb Wilson suffers a season-ending injury

While we all anxiously awaited to see if Wilson would suit up on Saturday night against Duke to close out the regular season, Shams Charania of ESPN provided a devastating and shocking update regarding the Tar Heels' star freshman forward.

Wilson has suffered another injury, one that will sideline him for the remainder of the 2025-2026 season.

What Happened

Charania reported that Wilson broke his right thumb in a non-contact drill in practice on Thursday and already has undergone season-ending surgery. This wipes out any chance that the future NBA Draft lottery pick returning to the court this season.

Yes, we've almost certainly have seen Wilson for the final time as a Tar Heel.

UNC released an official press release on the matter, providing further details:

University of North Carolina freshman forward Caleb Wilson broke his right thumb in a non-contact drill in practice on Thursday, March 5. He will need surgery and is out for the rest of the season.

Previously, he broke a bone in his left hand at Miami on February 10 and had missed Carolina's last six games.

He was cleared for individual workouts late last week and was working his way back to rejoining the lineup, but broke his right thumb on Thursday while dunking.

Talk about brutal news...

Wilson's freshman season is one to remember

Before suffering his initial injury, Wilson served as the Tar Heels' leading scorer (19.8 points per game) and rebounder (9.4 rebounds). He earned National Player of the Week honors twice and took home a trip of ACC Freshman of the Week accolades.

Wilson was one of the biggest storylines to hit college basketball this season, even in a year that featured a handful of outstanding freshman who will likely also be "one-and-done" prospects.

What this means for UNC

This heartbreaking news is tough to swallow, but the same objective has to remain status quo.

How UNC can replicate its comeback win over Duke without Caleb Wilson on Saturday

The Tar Heels must continue embracing that "next man up" mentality, one that has helped them post a 5-1 record thus far in Wilson's absence.

Yes, it hurts that Wilson is out for the season, as he truly bleeds Carolina Blue and provided us all with some amazing memories over his short stint in Chapel Hill. The thing that absolutely stinks is that we won't see him play for UNC again, as he's very likely heading to the NBA this summer.

Man, this stinks...
