The University of North Carolina announced on Sunday that it is suspending discussions about the future of the Smith Center indefinitely. This decision comes due to the university currently working toward naming a new head coach for the men's basketball program.

Below is the official statement that was released by the university.

Official Statement

“The University of North Carolina is suspending ongoing discussions about the future of the Smith Center in order to focus on identifying and selecting a new head men’s basketball coach. Arena discussions will resume after the new coach has had time to acclimate to the program and focus on future needs.”

Another setback to the process

It seems as if road blocks continue to hamper this process of identifying the right way to proceed for the sake of the future home of the Tar Heels. We went from being close to a decision (or having a decision already made but one that was stopped by some notable alumni), to being farther away from a decision just a few months later.

Postgame Tommy Lloyd interview will throw UNC fans in a spin cycle

With the Carolina North project set to begin in the Summer of 2027, the time is ticking to make a decision, one that won't come within the forseeable future.

Why it makes sense

Right now, the primary focus needs to be on finding the next head coach of the UNC basketball program.

Another UNC legend expected to join Marcus Paige and leave for Charlotte

While North Carolina aims to find the right head coach and allow him time to settle into his new role, the dialogue surrounding the future of the Smith Center can be delayed a bit. While the university is suspending the talks for now, it shouldn't be expected that this process will take a back seat for long, as those who have been involved in it will want to ramp up the conversations to hopefully come up with a solution as soon as possible.
