Miikka Muurinen has been a name that Tar Heel fans have heard a ton about throughout his recruitment.
The five-star forward was a name to keep an eye on for UNC, given that they were among the finalists in his initial list of seven schools he was considering.
His recruitment died down once he went overseas to play professionally this past season, but recent developements made him a hot commodity once again in the states.
While many thought UNC was a front-runner to land him, ultimately, they weren't even involved late in the process.

Joe Tipton of On3 reported that Miikka Muurinen has committed to John Calipari and the Arkansas Razorbacks. He chose Arkansas over his list of perceived finalists: UNC, Indiana, Kentucky, BYU, Illinois, and NC State.
It will be interesting to hear more about this situation, given that it feels like the Tar Heels were one of those elite-level programs that took themselves out of the mix (according to Jeff Goodman). Michael Malone and his staff must've either learned new details that drew them away from the talented forward or simply decided to pivot in another direction to fill out the Tar Heels' 2026-2027 roster.
For Calipari and the Razorbacks, they have absolutely loaded up this offseason. In addition to Muurinen, Arkansas also landed five-star guard Jordan Smith Jr. four-star small forward JJ Andrews and four-star shooting guard Abdou Toure, not to mention some key transfers in former Georgia guard Jeremiah Wilkinson (17.4 PPG) and Furman forward Cooper Bowser (13.8 PPG).
The Razorbacks have added an elite piece to the puzzle, as Calipari and his staff are all-in.
This news doesn't impact UNC much, given the circumstances. Sure, Tar Heel fans would've loved for him to wear the Carolina Blue uniform like his mother did during her collegiate career, but in the long run, the Tar Heels didn't appear to even be considered among the favorites down the stretch, as hopefully, more details will emerge revealing the truth of the matter.
