You're not alone if you think the current eligibility debate among college sports is turning into a circus. Just ask North Carolina great Tyler Hansbrough about that. Of course, this all wasn't a mess when he was still on campus in Chapel Hill, helping the Heels win the natty in 2009. However, current times have players battling for an extra year, leaving plenty of futures in question.
For North Carolina and Michael Malone, this includes uncertainty around potential starting center transfer Cameron Fens. He's one of many players going through lawsuits to try to get on the hardwood next season. Hansbrough has seen how all of this has unfolded, and he didn't hold back in going after the NCAA about it. Good.

"It's disgusting - it's disgusting," Hansbrough said with passion. "Nobody can blame anybody except for the NCAA. Be a little more clear on the rules, and I would also say have a little bit of a backbone. The reason I say that is because you're not going to please everybody. At some point, it becomes an issue where (they should say), 'this is college sports, this is what we're going to do, this is how the rules are set and everyone needs to follow these. If you want to take us to court, okay, let's go to court.'
"They have the funding to do that. Those guys make a good amount of money. Not everything needs to get pushed through legislation or needs a six-month wait or response. They make the salaries to make these decisions and make them in a respectable manner."
UNC continues to be in wait-and-see mode with stud center transfer Cameron Fens
Can anyone argue with what Hansbrough had to say? Everything is totally up in the air, and Carolina is among the schools that have to suffer through this. For now, Fens is not eligible, which creates a bit of an issue near the glass. If he's not able to suit up, then 5-star freshman Sayon Keita will be the one to fill the gap.
However, Malone said that while a final decision is made, Fens continues to go to classes, and he's also working out with the team. The season-opener this fall is sneaking up on us, and the sooner everyone knows what's going to happen with Fens, the better. Former Heel Seth Trimble is also in the same boat, but he's going through a legal battle while at Louisville.
All of this could have been avoided had the NCAA just grandfathered in 2022 signees for the 5-in-5 rule change, but that's a conversation for another time. Instead, the silliness of courts getting involved has taken over college sports, while Lane Kiffin is also working overtime in bringing former NFL players to the gridiron in college football - talk about a total joke.
Looking ahead to the 2026-27 season, Hansbrough of course is going to follow the Tar Heels closely, as his love for UNC is never going to drop by an ounce. Despite that, he's livid with how the NCAA is treating this eligibility drama, and he has every right to feel that way.
