It's nearly impossible to not be jacked up for Michael Malone's debut UNC season on the way. It's still going to take a little bit of time to get used to Hubert Davis no longer being in town, but Malone is ready to help put the past two miserable seasons behind everyone. And with Malone now running the show, he's bringing a different mindset to the table too.
While speaking to the media in Chapel Hill, Malone didn't hold back in saying he's ready to bring a bit of a 'tough love' approach to the Tar Heels. While Malone wants to make sure his players know he's got their back and is ready to help them in any way that he can. At the same time, his guys need to be at their best on and off the floor, and he won't settle for anything less:

Michael Malone bringing a tough love approach to UNC basketball is important
With Malone having around a $20 million roster for next season, it's quite clear that the talent level in Chapel Hill is going to be quite high. Big-name additions of course include Terrence Brown, Matt Able, and others. With this, there's going to be extra pressure on all the newcomers to operate at a high level, and also make sure they're buying into what Malone is trying to get done.
For most preseason Top 25 rankings, the Heels are barely in, or on the outside looking in. It's on Malone to make those scribes look foolish, but his players also have to be the ones to make sure they're getting things done consistently on the hardwood. This is where the tough love approach is going to work wonders.
With his new-look roster, Malone is going to have to hold everyone accountable at every moment. If 5-star Sayon Keita isn't producing on both ends of the floor, then Malone should have a short leash on him and look to his bench to see if someone can make an impact. The expectation is for Able to be one of the top scorers for UNC this campaign, and for good reason, but if he too struggles, let's see what someone else can do.
All in all, the pieces are in place for this to be a memorable season for the Tar Heels in Malone's debut college campaign. He has a Finals ring to his name, and while UNC isn't expected to push for the natty next April, that doesn't mean a deep NCAA Tournament run should be out of the question.
Last season, a first-round loss to VCU was posted, and it's something that still has Carolina fans downright irate. Malone is the one responsible to make sure history doesn't repeat itself, but judging from the mindset he's instilling throughout the program, and the high standards he's going to hold his stars too, it feels like the wheels are moving in the right direction here.
