One of Bill Belichick's most highly regarded recruits is making headlines for reasons unrelated to football.

Freshman defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland is not currently participating in team activities following a September car accident and multiple traffic violations.

WRAL first reported the news, citing information from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol about the incident.

Cleveland, a former four-star prospect who flipped his commitment from Texas to North Carolina, has not yet appeared in a game for the Tar Heels this season.

Now, additional details have emerged regarding his absence from the program.

Details emerge surrounding Vodney Cleveland's September accident

According to WRAL, Cleveland was involved in a single-vehicle accident in Chatham County in mid-September.

The report states that Cleveland was driving a 2026 BMW when he attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone, lost control while navigating a curve, and struck a tree, which then caught fire.

State troopers cited Cleveland for exceeding the posted speed limit, unsafe passing across a double-yellow line, and failing to maintain lane control.

According to the report, Cleveland was traveling approximately 75 mph in an area with a posted speed limit of 45 mph.

The September accident wasn't Cleveland's first reported traffic-related incident. Just a few days earlier, on September 14, Cleveland received a speeding citation in Durham County after allegedly traveling 66 mph in a 45-mph zone. He was also cited in February after being clocked traveling 96 mph on Interstate 40 near Greensboro.

After these reports emerged, UNC acknowledged the September accident and confirmed Cleveland's current status with the football program, stating that he is not currently participating in team activities.

Cleveland arrived in Chapel Hill as one of the most notable additions to Belichick's 2026 recruiting class. The Birmingham, Alabama, native was a four-star defensive line prospect who initially committed to Texas before ultimately choosing North Carolina.

His decision to join the Tar Heels represented a significant recruiting victory for Belichick and his staff, particularly given the competition for his services.

The defensive lineman has been listed as unavailable on UNC's ACC availability reports throughout conference play, and his absence has been questioned throughout the 2026 season.

The latest developments provide some context, but don't fully answer whether the incident is the main reason he hasn't played this season.

At this point, there is no publicly announced timetable for Cleveland's return to team activities.

For now, one of UNC's most promising young defensive linemen remains away from team activities, with questions surrounding when, or whether, he'll return this season.
