UNC and Bill Belichick in 'crisis mode' must lead to a difficult decision

Bruce Feldman is not letting up on his brutal (yet true) assessment of where the UNC football program currently stands.

A reporter from The Athletic, Feldman ripped UNC over the current Michael Lombardi situation, one that is looming large over the program just a month away from the 2026 season. The Tar Heels' general manager, the highest-paid GM in the sport, is currently on administrative paid leave due to an HR investigation, leaving the front office in limbo for Bill Belichick's program.

Feldman continued his ripping of the Tar Heels with his latest article, which was made free to the public for obvious reasons. What his article goes to show is that it's more than past due for the University of North Carolina to make some changes, starting with the guy who is currently under the most scrutiny.

Feldman tabs the current state of the UNC football program as "crisis mode," a fitting statement giving what has been transpiring ever since Belichick took over as the program's head coach.

"He (Lombardi) should be getting his paycheck with a ski mask on," Feldman said. "I'm sorry. This is such a staggering amount of ineptitude in the job he's done for Bill Belichick."

Belichick has put an unwavering amount of faith in Lombardi, a man with a questionable track record to begin with. He not only brought him to Chapel Hill and gave him arguably the biggest job available on his new-look staff, he also made sure he was compensated as the top general manager that the sport had to offer.

Right off the bat, this didn't seem like a great decision, but now, it's totally backfiring.

Add this to all the unncessary Belichick family drama, including the situation with his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, who simply stirs the pot in her own right, it just shows that the headaches aren't worth the hassle.

Now, if the program was winning games and luring in top-tier recruits, we might be a little more lenient to deal with all the other nonsense. Based on last year's horrific season and the projected disappointing season ahead, the patience is wearing thin in all aspects.

While we await the outcome of the HR investigation, it will be interesting to see how the UNC football program plans to proceed. If the investigation doesn't yield any disciplinary action, does UNC decide to just move on and start fresh, or will vast changes be in the cards following the conclusion of the 2026 season based on the results?

At this point, the damage might be done to the point where changes are absolutely necessary, and those changes aren't just focused on Lombardi. That includes Belichick as well, as he's made an absolute mess of the situation in Chapel Hill in just a short amount of time.
