UNC adds another big-time arm to its pitching staff for the 2027 season

Scott Forbes and the Diamond Heels are absolutely loading up in preparation for another run to Omaha in 2027.

After losing some key players via the MLB Draft, including two weekend starting pitchers, the Diamond Heels needed to add some veteran depth to the pitching staff. Of course, Caden Glauber is likely already penciled in as the team's Friday night starter, and returners Jackson Rose and Folger Boaz likely factor in as well, but there's never too much depth on the pitching side of things.

To recoup some of the lost pitching talent due to exhausted eligibility and MLB Draft selections, Forbes and his staff have made a concerted effort to bring in some quality arms to replenish the staff. Just when we thought UNC might be done adding to its 2027 roster, they surprised us all by making another major splash in the transfer portal.

JuCo transfer Major Osbolt commits to Scott Forbes and North Carolina

After visiting Chapel Hill on Wednesday, former Walters State right-hander Major Osbolt has committed to play for Scott Forbes and the Diamond Heels. Inside Carolina was the first to report the news on Sunday afternoon.

Osbolt is regarded as one of the top JuCo arms in the country, coming off a redshirt freshman season in which he posted an 8-1 record with a 4.56 ERA over 17 games (15 starts). A 6-foot-3, 195-pounder, Osbolt was originally committed to LSU but elected to reopen his recruitment at the beginning of July, leading him to where he is today as the newest Tar Heel.

A righty with a mid-90s fastball and a low-80s slider that is his primary secondary option, Osbolt hopes to be the next former Walters State standout to thrive at North Carolina. We saw what Jake Knapp, a fellow former Walters State pitcher, was able to do as a Tar Heel, and the hope is that Osbolt could make a similiar impact in his next collegiate stop.

The pipeline from Walters State to North Carolina is busier than ever, as Osbolt will be one of four Walters State transfers to suit up for the Diamond Heels during the 2027 campaign. Three of them are pitchers: right-hander Ryan Smith, left-hander Tim Tyler, and, of course, Osbolt.

North Carolina's pitching staff for the 2027 season will feature a mix of veteran returners along with some key transfer portal additions. Even after losing the likes of Jason DeCaro and Ryan Lynch, Forbes and company have gone out and replaced the talent, bringing in some guys they believe can help eat some innings for next year's squad.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, given that some of the guys UNC has brought in were primarily starters last season. With only so many spots in the rotation, there will be a fierce competition to earn a spot in the weekend rotation, as Forbes will have a handful of options he can turn to in order to get the job done.

It's never a rebuild in Chapel Hill, it's always a reload, especially for Scott Forbes and the Diamond Heels.
