Macon Winslow had a huge decision to make regarding his future.
After being selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round of the 2026 MLB Draft, Winslow had to decide if he wanted to start up his professional baseball career or return to Chapel Hill for another season.
That decision has officially been made, as its one we were all expecting him to ultimately make.

According to MLB.com's draft tracker, Winslow has come to terms on a contract with the Phillies. He signed for the exact draft value amount that his pick (Round 6, No. 190) was projected at, as his signing bonus with the franchise will be for $338.80k.
This decision shouldn't surprise anyone, especially with the moves that Scott Forbes and the Diamond Heels made this offseason via the transfer portal. North Carolina added a pair of transfer catchers, a sign that showed Winslow was leaning toward leaving for the pros after hearing his name called in this year's draft class.
In what will be his lone season as a Tar Heel, Winslow finished the 2026 campaign with a .282 batting average, 10 home runs and 57 RBIs. He, along with Colin Hynek, served as a formidable duo behind the plate, guiding the pitching staff to the College World Series Championship Series.
An injury impacted him throughout the second half of the season, limiting him to mostly being the team's designated hitter. However, the Phillies are banking on his early season success when evaluating their newest catcher, realizing that this guy is very good at what he does when he has a full bill of health behind him.

With Winslow signing on the dotted line, each of the former Tar Heels selected in this year's draft have agreed to terms with their respective clubs. To add to the guys who were drafted, Colin Hynek signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Cubs, adding another Tar Heel to the list of guys from this season's College World Series squad who will begin their professional baseball careers.

It's disappointing that we didn't get to see Winslow healthy for the full 2026 season, but he proved that he is not only a fierce competitor, but that he has the makings of being a very good catcher at the professional baseball level. A steady presence behind the plate and a more than capable hitter with the bat in his hands, franchises across the league dream of finding guys who can do both, especially at a position that demands so much from an individual over the grind of a baseball season.
The contract details are now finalized, and Macon Winslow is set to begin his career in the big leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies. Hopefully, Winslow's injury is starting to heal properly, as we all can't wait to see what he's able to do in this next step in his baseball career.
