Let's face it: the Hubert Davis era has been nothing more than a roller coaster.

Now five years into his tenure as the head coach of the UNC basketball program, the common trends that have been there essentially since day one have never gone away. If those were good trends, you'd love to hear that, but these types of trends are absolutely mind-boggling to think about.

A Blue Blood like North Carolina, one of the most historic college basketball programs ever, should NOT be having these types of issues!

Where do we begin...

UNC struggles against good opponents

Hubert Davis has not done a great job in terms of winning games against Quad 1 opponents.

In fact, Taylor Vippolis provided the data, showing that the Tar Heels have won less than 40% of these games with Davis at the helm.

Yikes!

Other than the 2023-2024 season, one in which North Carolina claimed the ACC regular season title, UNC has struggled in Quad 1 opportunities under Davis' direction. In two instances, North Carolina won a single Quad 1 game over the course of an entire season.

We all remember the 2022-2023 team, the preseason No. 1 squad who failed to make the NCAA Tournament, and, of course, last year's squad who barely even made it to Dayton as part of the play-in event.

Former Tar Heel who drew UNC coaching buzz fired by current school

You can make a very strong case that the bid the Tar Heels received last year wasn't an earned one.

Basically, UNC has stunk in regard to beating good teams during the past five seasons. While North Carolina has beaten those teams they should beat (think of early season non-conference opponents), the record against good teams leaves a lot of room for desire.

But wait, there's more...

We've all grown accustomed to North Carolina digging itself into a double-digit deficit, but Inside Carolina provided an eye-popping stat that makes the Tar Heels' inability to keep games close even worse.

Over the past two seasons, UNC has fallen behind its opponent by double-digits on 26, yes, 26 occasions. Of those 26 instances, 18 found North Carolina trailing by 15 points or more.

Now THAT is unacceptable!

Sure, seven of those games resulted in come from behind victories. The ability to crawl back into games shows the fight of the Tar Heels, but let's face it: you're not always going to be able to crawl out of the hole you dug yourself into.

The data shows that, as 75% of those double-digit deficits resulted in a loss for the Tar Heels.

Something has to change

North Carolina has not lived up to its Blue Blood reputation during the Hubert Davis era.

The facts are speaking for itself.

There are varying factors that go into each season. Whether it's the team's roster construction of schedule of teams they face, At some point, you have to look at the consistent factors (such as the head coach) to really identify ways to rectify the issues at hand.

So far, North Carolina hasn't been able to fix these woes, another sign pointing toward the program eventually determining that Davis just might not be the right guy for the job.
