North Carolina's thrilling road victory over No. 25-ranked Pittsburgh unfortunately came at a significant cost.
Starting cornerback Tre Miller is reportedly doubtful to return this season after suffering a significant lower-body injury, potentially taking a key piece away from a Tar Heel defense that just delivered its best performance of the season.
Miller left the game in the third quarter and was later carted from the bench area to the locker room, a towel draped over his head. The redshirt junior did not return, as there was concern that the injury was significant.
Prior to leaving the game due to the injury, Miller was putting together a career best performance. He recorded an interception and tallied two pass breakups, earning a 91.0 coverage grade on 53 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

UNC's defense loses a significant piece in Tre Miller
After seeing limited action as a sophomore a season ago, Miller went to work this offseason. He not only improved his skills on the field but also built his body to get stronger, and the results show the drastic improvements he made.
Unfortunately, it looks like we won't get to see him continue building on his early season success due to this injury.
Not only did the Tar Heels secondary lose Miller in the win over Pitt, they also saw senior Kaleb Cost go down on the opening drive after a scary collision with a concrete wall behind the endzone. His timetable for a return is unknown at this time, but it's possible UNC could be without both standouts for the foreseeable future.
Of course, all UNC can do is adopt a "next man up" mentality in their absence and rely on other players to fill the void. The good news is that UNC has had plenty of contributors on defense this season, so they likely have the depth to absorb two losses in the secondary.
It certainly helps when your head coach is one of the greatest defensive minds that the sport has ever seen. You already know Belichick is game-planning to help his defense maintain the success it's seen this season, a group that has exceeded expectations.
Tre Miller has emerged as a breakout star for the UNC football program, and it's unfortunate that his season is likely coming to an end prematurely. However, you have to be very encouraged with what he showed through the first five games of the regular season, as the Tar Heels will be thrilled to have him back when the time comes (whether at the end of this season or for the start of the 2027 campaign).
This is a small setback for a major comeback for Tre Miller, as we haven't seen the last of this emerging defensive back.
