When it came down to the decision on Dylan Mingo's future at North Carolina, mostly everyone expected that the five-star guard would be calling the shots.

However, it turned out to be the exact opposite, as UNC elected to "part ways" with one of the top prospects in the Class of 2026.

Of course, it didn't make much sense at the time, given that Mingo was heavily recruited by the old regime but still seemed to be someone the new staff, under Michael Malone, wanted to bring to Chapel Hill.

Now, as more time passes and more information continues to swirl, you can start to understand why this situation played out the way it did.

Matt Norlander provides an interesting Dylan Mingo update

While appearing on CBS Sports' Eye On College Basketball Podcast, Matt Norlander revealed an interesting tidbit regarding the former UNC basketball commit.

Did another injury force this decision? Norlander seems to believe it might have.

"You had Dylan Mingo, decommit. I was told he actually got hurt again in March. He's been hurt for a long time. He was an incoming five-star prospect, and so essentially, they were gonna need to probably redshirt him next season. And whether he was on board with that or not, he has decommitted as a result."

If Mingo, who has missed a significant amount of time over the last calendar year due to injury, suffered yet another injury, you could understand why UNC was weary of handing him the keys to the starting point guard position. Given his health may be in question, how could the Tar Heels justify paying him top NIL dollar for a high school recruit to have him redshirt, leaving them with a big void to fill on the roster and less financial flexibility to work with.

While nothing has been confirmed by either side, Norlander's reported information is something to keep an eye on. The injury could impact his recruitment elsewhere, as programs who are deemed to be interested may have to pay the money while not knowing if he will even step foot on the court this season.
