The UNC women's lacrosse team is now one win away from defending its title.

On Friday, the Tar Heels defeated Maryland in the Final Four in Chicago, clinching a spot in the NCAA Championship game for the second consecutive season.

Maryland scored the first goal of the game, but wasn't ready for the Chloe Humphrey storm that was brewing. The sophomore star of the Tar Heels scored three consecutive goals, helping set the tone for North Carolina in its pursuit of another national championship game berth.

Chloe Humphrey continues rewriting the record books at North Carolina

Into the early portion of the second quarter, Maryland fought to keep their title game hopes alive. At the 12:24 mark in the second frame, the score was tied up at 3, but from that point on, UNC took over complete control of the game.

Caroline Godine found the back of the net with just under eight minutes remaining in the half, and Kate Levy followed it up with a pair of goals of her own. Humphrey scored her fourth goal of the contest with 2:33 remaining, while Addison Pattillo capped off a 5-0 run with 1:06 left before the half.

A Maryland goal with 13 seconds in the half wasn't nearly enough, as North Carolina set itself up perfectly to control the game through the final two quarters of play.

The Tar Heels kept the offense rolling, outscoring the Terrapins 8-2 during the second half of play. North Carolina's offensive attack was so potent that they even forced a running clock, showing just how strong of a performance the Tar Heels put together overall.

Looking to capture its second straight national title, the UNC women's lacrosse program now awaits the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Johns Hopkins vs. Northwestern. The winner of that game will take on North Carolina on Sunday afternoon for the 2026 national title.

With a win, the Tar Heels will do something they've never done as a program before: capture back-to-back national championships. Based on what we've seen from this team, they are more than capable of getting the job done, as they have all the pieces necessary to get the job done.

Now, it's up to this star-studded group, led by Humphrey, to use that title game experience from a season ago to help set themselves a part in yet another title game opportunity.

One more win for the UNC women's lacrosse program to capture that goal they've set since winning last year's title. They've worked for this, and now the opportunity is right in front of them.
