One thing is for certain: the Boston Red Sox really love the Diamond Heels!
After selecting Jake Schaffner with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, the Red Sox organization decided that one Tar Heel wasn't enough for this draft class.
Insert Owen Hull, who will be joining Schaffner within the Red Sox organization.

Hull was selected with the No. 67 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. His draft spot is identical to his ranking on MLB.com's final top-250 prospect list ahead of this year's draft.
After two seasons playing at George Mason, Hull entered the transfer portal and landed at North Carolina. It was a decision that paid off in a huge way for both sides, as Hull’s incredible 2026 season helped lead the Diamond Heels to the College World Series Championship series.
Although the Diamond Heels fell just short, Hull put together an All-American season in what could be his lone year in Chapel Hill. A first-team All-American selection by D1Baseball, Hull finished the season with a .393 average to go along with 103 hits, 27 doubles, and 87 RBI. His totals gave him the second-most hits and RBI in the NCAA and the third-most doubles. He came up just four RBI short of setting a new single-season program record, which has been 91 since 2013, held by Colin Moran.
When you think of Owen Hull, it’s nearly impossible not to remember his heroics in Game 3 of the Super Regionals.
The Diamond Heels were down to their final two outs, needing some ‘Bosh Magic’ to clinch their trip to Omaha. Hull, who already had three doubles in the game, had one more in his bat, drilling one to the warning track that scored the game-winning run.

North Carolina has been very fortunate to have some star-studded players patrolling center field over the last few seasons. Vance Honeycutt held down the fort before passing the torch to Kane Kepley, who had an incredible lone season at UNC in his own right. Hull was next in line and didn’t take the assignment lightly, becoming an instant fan favorite for his “O-Zone” mentality.
What the Red Sox are getting is simple: an ultimate competitor, an elite two-way player, and, most importantly, an incredible teammate. If you’re looking for a player comparison, it’s hard not to see some Christian Yelich in his game, as he easily could be a similar type of player throughout his professional baseball career.
It’s important to note that, although Hull was drafted, he could still potentially return to UNC. Players selected in this weekend’s draft have until 5 p.m. ET on July 27 to sign with the club that drafts them. Each pick in the first 10 rounds is assigned a slot value, though teams are free to negotiate signing bonuses above or below that amount. However, given where he was selected, it would be a stunning turn of events if he doesn’t turn pro at this point.
Now, Tar Heel fans will have two more reasons to follow the Red Sox, as two of UNC's biggest transfer additions from a season ago are now heading to Beantown. Similar to what we saw this season, we could envision seeing them hitting near the top of the Red Sox batting order for many years to come.
Give credit to the Red Sox: they are really focused on bringing in some quality players and even better people. Hull and Schaffner will both be incredible additions to the franchise, which already has so much rich history behind it.
