Well, North Carolina loves to "keep it in the family." It seems that Bill Belichick agrees with that sentiment.
In what was the expected move, Belichick's son, Steve, is set to become the UNC football program's defensive coordinator. Matt Zenitz reported the news, stating that Belichick will join his dad's staff after Washington's season comes to an end.
For those worried about the "head coach in waiting" clause, it doesn't appear that this is the case. In fact, this is actually a sneaky good move for the Tar Heels given what Belichick was able to accomplish in his lone season at Washington.
Under Belichick's direction, the Huskies defensive made massive improvements. They went from being ranked 99th nationally in total defense a season ago to 26th this year. Washington had the fifth-best pass defense in the nation, allowing just 166.8 yards per outing and 13 touchdowns on the year.
The writing seemed to be on the wall when Washington's standout transfer linebacker, Khmori House, committed to North Carolina. Once Washington's season comes to a close, it will be interesting to see if any current Huskies land in the transfer portal in an effort to follow their defensive coordinator to Chapel Hill.
Another piece of Bill Belichick's first staff with the UNC football program has been resolved, as it's a hire that makes a ton of sense for a team looking to improve defensively.
Let's face it: the Belichick's know a thing or two about the defensive side of the football.
