Steve Belichick on medical leave adds to growing concerns for UNC football

The UNC football program was dealt with another blow ahead of the start of the 2026 season.

As the Tar Heels prepare for their trip to Ireland to take on TCU, they will be without defensive coordinator Steve Belichick for an indefinite amount of time.

On Thursday morning, Bill Belichick confirmed to the media that his Steve Belichick, his son and the program's defensive coordinator, is currently on medical leave and remains away from the team's training camp.

Belichick added that the program hopes he'll be back as soon as possible. No other details regarding the situation were revealed.

“Just want to let everyone know that my son Steve’s on medical leave, and look forward to getting him back as soon as possible,” the elder Belichick said. “It’s a medical situation so I really can’t make any further comment on that.”

In his absence, Belichick said it will be a group effort to coach up the defense while his son is away from the program.

First things first, the hope is that Steve Belichick is doing well and that his medical situation isn't too serious. Health always comes first, so it's important to make sure everything is good in regard to his health before worrying about football.

Sure, it's not ideal to not have the defensive coordinator around for training camp. However, it does add some relief to know that his father, who is the head coach, is one of the greatest defensive minds the sport of football has ever seen, as he'll be able to fill in the void with the help of the rest of the staff for as long as Belichick is away from the program.

While the Tar Heels had a rough year in 2025, the defense wasn't bad by any means in the first year of the Belichick era. North Carolina was ranked in the top-60 nationally, as their 4.3 yards per play allowed ranked No. 30 among all qualifying FBS programs.

The Tar Heels could be even better on the defensive side of the ball this season, but definitely would love to have Steve Belichick back on campus soon to help steer the ship in the right direction.

From the Michael Lombardi saga to the latest medical news regarding Steve Belichick, the UNC football program has been rolling through the punches. However, all off-the-field issues aside, the goal is still to be ready to play football on August 29 when they take the field in Ireland to open up the 2026 college football season.
