For now, it appears that the UNC football program is going to greatly benefit from the latest court ruling regarding college eligibility.
In case you haven't heard, U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney released an injunction on July 31 against the NCAA, one which granted athletes who graduated high school in the Class of 2022 an additional year of eligibility.
To add clarification to the order, Sweeney noted that this injunction does not permit transfers to receive an additional year of eligibility. Schools are only allowed to add players who were on their 2025 roster and did not enter the transfer portal.

The good news for UNC is, one of their most productive players from a season ago meets the current criteria.
Rece Verhoff to return to UNC for his fifth year of collegiate eligibility
It's very important to note that these types of things regarding eligibility could change in an instant. However, at the current moment, placekicker Rece Verhoff is set to return to UNC for his fifth college season.

Verhoff transferred to UNC last offseason ahead of his senior season and took over the kicking duties for the Tar Heels. He connected on 19 of his 23 field goal attempts, going a perfect 20-for-20 on extra point attempts. For his efforts, Verhoff earned All-ACC Honorable Mention accolades.
His best game last season came on November 15 against Wake Forest, one in which he connected on a season-high four field goals, including a 57-yarder that set a new program record.

We can't stress enough the importance of understanding that this could change at the drop of a hat. It's no guarantee that another judge ruling doesn't overturn this one, but for now, you can pencil in Verhoff on the special teams depth chart.
The good news for UNC is that the program is bringing back one of its most productive players from a season ago. Verhoff's return also adds a veteran presence to the special teams unit, as he likely now becomes the favorite to once again handle the kicking duties.
Others in the special teams room who could challenge for the job are LSU transfer Aeron Burrell and freshman David Green. While it's still unclear as to whether or not this ruling will hold up, the Tar Heels, at least for the time being, have some options to work with as they attempt to figure out the depth chart heading into the 2026 season.
As of now, Verhoff is the lone player who has stated his intentions on returning for a fifth season. It will be interesting to see if any others have the same idea and want to attempt to follow Verhoff's lead back to Chapel Hill for one more go-around.
Based on what we saw from Verhoff a year ago, this could be a major addition just a few weeks ahead of the start of the new season.
