To some, rookie minicamp might seem like a waste of time.

For those who get the opportunity to compete and lay it all out on the line for a potential once in a lifetime chance to fulfill a dream, it means the absolute world.

Smith Vilbert was one of those players who didn't hear his name called during the 2026 NFL Draft but was invited to participate in a rookie minicamp. Vilbert took part in the Minnesota Vikings' rookie minicamp and absolutely showed out, earning more opportunities with the organization.

Smith Vilbert signs with the Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings believe they have found a diamond in the rough, agreeing to sign Vilbert to a three-year contract. Vilbert's agent, Brett Tessler, revealed the news on social media.

After spending most of his college career at Penn State, Vilbert took a chance on himself, transferring to North Carolina to play for Bill Belichick. He had a solid year, appearing in 12 games, recording 22 total tackles (11 assist), one sack, a forced fumble, and a pair of fumble recoveries.

With no college eligibility remaining, Vilbert, a St. Joseph Regional High School (NJ) product, began to test the professional waters, working hard to prove to NFL teams that he deserved a chance to compete. The Vikings gave him that chance, and it paid off to his advantage, as now he has inked a multi-year deal to join the franchise.

Of course, Vilbert's work is far from done, as he will need to continue to show throughout training camp that he belongs on the 53-man roster. However, Vilbert is a guy who has bet on himself and it's certainly paid off up until this point in time, as he knows this is an opportunity he must take full advantage of.

Everyone loves a good underdog story, and guys who sign with NFL teams as undrafted free agents certainly fit the bill. The hope now is that Vilbert's Cinderella story can continue, as Tar Heel fans would love to see him chasing opposing quarterbacks on Sundays this upcoming fall.
