The UNC football program announced their players of the week for their Week 2 win over NC Central.

After sitting out the second half of the Charlotte game as an injury precaution, Omarion Hampton got back on his steam train to Tar Heel history, and the tracks ran right through NC Central's defense. The junior running back trampled Eagles left and right to the tune of 210 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and it looked like he easily could have run for 100 more yards if offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey was so inclined.

Nickelback and two-sport star Kaleb Cost led the UNC football program in tackles with eight, combined with Power Echols on a sack, and had the first interception of his college career.

Cost is showing improved coverage skills to accompany the hitting ability he demonstrated in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. He had two pass breakups and only allowed three receptions. These reps against NC Central were very valuable for Cost's development, and the interception, which was super athletic, will do his confidence wonders.

Defensive lineman Kevin Hester was a destructive force in the interior of the line of scrimmage. His four tackles held NC Central to just seven rushing yards. While Hester's performance was solid and noteworthy, I suspect he was selected instead of Des Evans--who had four tackles (three for a loss) and a sack--because of his two roughing-the-quarterback penalties.

Christian Hamilton was the special teams player of the week for his muffed punt recovery in the first quarter. The UNC football program was forced to punt on their own 9-yard line, and Hamilton was Johnny-on-the-spot when Chris Mosley couldn't field the Tom Maginness kick cleanly. Hamilton nearly caught Mosley again in the third quarter after he muffed a Maginness 44-yard punt at the NC Central 17-yard line.
