Neoklis Avdalas... YOU are a Tar Heel!

Michael Malone makes a major first splash by landing Neoklis Avdalas

From the moment he entered his name into the transfer portal, Neoklis Avdalas received strong interest from the UNC basketball program. As Michael Malone and his staff began sorting through options to build the 2026-2027 roster, Avdalas became an even more logical choice, given his size and versatility.

With most of last year's roster testing their luck in the transfer portal, Malone and his staff essentially have to start from scratch. While the hope is that some guys elect to stay on campus, the likelihood is that the roster for next year's team will be completely different, which makes going after a player like Avdalas make even more sense.

When you're building a roster, you want guys with size, versatility and, of course, proven success. Avdalas checks off all those boxes and hasn't even fully tapped into his full potential yet, something that Michael Malone and his staff will aim to unlock once he arrives on campus.

There's a lot to like about Avdalas' skillset, as he's a guy who can do a little bit of everything. For starters, his size at the guard position is Magic Johnson-like, as he is capable of defending multiple positions given his size and athleticism.

While three-point shooting wasn't his best trait as a freshman (knocking down just 31.4% of his shots from beyond the arc), he is a guy who can attack the basket and finish strong at the rim. If he's not scoring, he's facilitating for his teammates, as he averaged 4.6 assists per game.

In Michael Malone's system, which relies heavily on players making the right reads to generate open looks. Avdalas certainly fits that bill, given that he has elite playmaking ability especially for a player of his size.

North Carolina's roster building is far from done. The Tar Heels still have a lot of work to do, but landing a commitment from Neoklis Avdalas is a major step in the right direction as that process if officially underway. Malone and his staff have brought in a versatile player who can impact the game in many ways. Now the goal is to put more talent around him to put next year's team in a prime position to be an immediate contender as this new era of Carolina basketball officially gets underway.
