While the focus for the top high school basketball players in the country is this week's Peach Jam event, one highly-coveted UNC recruiting target is making plans for after the competition.
Beckham Black, the No. 3-ranked player in the Class of 2027 according to Rivals, is a guy who has drawn plenty of attention from some of the best programs in the country. He has a long list of suitors who are vying for a commitment, but a few seem to be gaining some traction as his recruitment gains steam.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound point guard from Duncanville, Texas revealed an noteworthy development in his recruitment, one that involves Michael Malone and the Tar Heels.

5-stars UNC must heavily pursue after Marcus Spears Jr. setback
Whenever there's a coaching change on campus, you worry about how that could impact the relationships that were already built with high school athletes. The Tar Heels started recruiting Black while Hubert Davis was still at the helm, and many UNC fans were curious to see which prospects would earn the new-look staff's attention.
When it came to Beckham Black, there was little doubt that Michael Malone and his staff would attempt to pick up right where the old staff left off in his recruitment.
In fact, Malone didn't just reignite UNC's pursuit of Black, but they've also made him a focal point of their recruiting efforts. While he hasn't even coached a game at the college level yet, Malone has shown us all that he and his staff will be very aggressive in pursuing the best available talents on the recruiting trail.
Black is a top-tier prospect who has the absolute makings of being an instant game changer from the moment he steps foot on a college campus. North Carolina isn't afraid to let the country know that they are heavily pursuing arguably the top player this graduating class has to offer, and are going to do everything in their power to make him the point guard of the future in Chapel Hill.
The good news is that the interest seems to be very much mutual. A player isn't going to waste their time visiting a campus that they have no intention of potentially playing at, and they certainly wouldn't schedule their first two official visits to programs that don't rank highly on their recruiting list.
If you're looking at this from North Carolina's perspective, this is a great developement in Black's recruitment. While his official visits likely won't be limited to just UNC and Texas, North Carolina will get one of the first cracks to show Black what Chapel Hill has to offer, a pitch that could put the Tar Heels in the lead for a potential commitment down the road if all goes well.
