Following the announcement of his resignation as the General Manager of the UNC football program, Michael Lombardi released a statement regarding the matter.

Michael Lombardi releases an official statement following his resignation
"I want to thank Chancellor Roberts and Bill Belichick for the opportunity to serve as the GM of UNC Football. I have decided it's best for me to resign my position as GM to allow the team to focus on the '26 season."
The University of North Carolina also released a statement of their own, one that pretty much coincides with how the situation has been handled from its side:
"Effective September 3, 2026, Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position as General Manager of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s football program. The University will continue its ongoing investigation and will consider all appropriate corrective actions responsive to the information it learns."
Essentially, the statements from both sides are what you would expect following an outcome like this.
Now 38 days after he was placed on administrative paid leave, the timing seems rather odd for Lombardi's resignation. Just a few days prior, Lombardi's lawyer was quoted as saying that the investigation was a "witch hunt," making it odd that he willingly resigned while the university confirmed that the case was still being reviewed.
Did some reported news that has surfaced since make him jump the gun and get out of dodge before it all gets too out of hand?
Regardless, this situation is still brewing, and, unfortunately, isn't going to allow the team to focus on the 2026 season as Lombardi stated he hoped his resignation would allow. With this news, plus the arrival of some very concerning (and unconfirmed at this point) accusations against the program, a whole can of worms is once again open, once again taking the focus away from what it should be on: the players competing every week on the field.
If you thought Lombardi's resignation was going to be a clean slate for UNC to get back to the main priority, you couldn't be farther from the truth. This just re-opens the nonsense and speculation that surrounded the program when the investigation was first put into place, but now this news just allows it to resurface and once again draw all the headlines.
Now, we will have to wait and see when UNC will conclude its investigation, one that we all hope isn't as big of a mess as the speculation is pointing toward.
